IntelliRad Imaging Celebrates Dr. Thomas Keane’s Appointment as HHS Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and National Coordinator for Health IT
Miami, FL — June 4, 2025 — IntelliRad Imaging proudly announces that Dr. Thomas Keane, one of our esteemed breast imaging and interventional radiologists, has been appointed as the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ASTP/ONC) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Dr. Keane brings a unique blend of clinical expertise and technological acumen to this pivotal federal role. Prior to his medical career, he worked as a software developer and engineer. He earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College, completed his internship at Johns Hopkins, and pursued radiology residency and interventional radiology fellowship training at New York-Presbyterian and Johns Hopkins, respectively. He is board-certified in diagnostic radiology and vascular and interventional radiology.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Keane has held significant positions within HHS. He served as a senior advisor to the Deputy Secretary, administered the COVID-19 Provider Relief Fund, and led the development of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s National Nursing Home COVID Action Network.

In his new role, Dr. Keane will oversee national health IT policy, focusing on interoperability, electronic health records, and the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity within healthcare systems. His appointment follows a strategic reorganization of HHS in July 2024, aimed at unifying technology, data, and AI policy under the ASTP/ONC umbrella.

The American College of Radiology has lauded Dr. Keane’s appointment, highlighting his commitment to enhancing image exchange and reducing regulatory burdens on physicians.

“We are immensely proud of Dr. Keane’s achievements and his dedication to advancing healthcare technology,” said Dr. Eduardo Franca, President of IntelliRad Imaging. “His leadership at the national level will undoubtedly contribute to the evolution of health IT, benefiting patients and providers alike.”
